The Call of a Father

In a world filled with distractions, uncertainties, and shifting cultural values, the role of a father has never been more crucial. The Bible consistently elevates the responsibility of fathers to guide, instruct, and shape the lives of their children, especially their sons.

God placed a unique responsibility on fathers.

Deuteronomy 6:7 says, “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

This was an instruction given to parents, with fathers bearing the weight of spiritual leadership in the home. Teaching sons is not simply about passing on knowledge; it’s about modeling a life devoted to God.

Sons watch how their fathers live; they do not just listen to what they say.

Ephesians 6:4 says, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

A godly father instructs with patience, corrects with love, and lives with integrity. He teaches not only with words but with consistent, Christ-like action.

Today’s culture desperately needs the biblical version of fatherhood. Fathers must rise to the calling, not as perfect men, but as faithful ones. Teaching our sons the truth of scripture, the value of hard work, and the character of Christ is one of the most meaningful and lasting investments that we can make.

So, what is my point?

Two Saturdays ago, I watched as my husband taught our sons how to dig a hole in which to plant a tree. Originally, he just told them what to do and continued putting down the grass seed in our yard, but when he saw them struggling, he went over to show them exactly how they needed to work the shovel. He calmly explained how much pressure they needed to use, how to break up the dirt so that it would move the way they wanted it to, and how to make sure the hole would be deep enough.

I was not around when my husband taught his sons their first lessons, so it means a lot to me to be able to watch him interact with them now and teach them the lessons they will learn at this age; lessons that will truly shape them into the men they will become.

I believe that we need to return to God’s design, embrace the privilege and power of a father’s influence. For when a father teaches his son, he not only shapes a man, but he also shapes generations.
